Artist's Description

Featured: ABC 2/18/2015

A grant from South Carolina Parks Recreation and Tourism allowed Palmetto Conservation Foundation to deck and add handrails to this 1,100-foot long bridge over the Broad River. The view is spectacular, especially when the bald eagles soar overhead.

While standing on the trestle you can look down and see the pilings left from the original bridge, which was destroyed during the Civil War. At the time, General William Tecumseh Shermans troops were devastating the area as they continued their infamous march to the sea, burning nearby bridges and towns. Telegrams from that time have led historians to believe that the Confederate soldiers were in fact the ones to burn this particular bridge. The Confederates may have done this to keep the Union troops from crossing and furthering the destruction.

About Lisa Wooten
